The first gold to be discovered in North Carolina was found on the site of the Reed Gold Mine. It is part of the reason North Carolina lead the nation in gold production up until the California gold rush. The first piece of gold was found in 1779. Now visitors to the mine can try their hand at gold panning, and gain and understanding about colonial and post revolutionary gold mining.
